Description

Argonne’s annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED) is looking for employees interested in serving as mentors for the on-site event Thursday, Feb. 20th, at the Building 240 TCS Conference Center from 7:30 am to 4 pm.

IGED gives female students a unique opportunity to discover STEM careers alongside world-class scientists and engineers. Participants will be able to enjoy motivational presentations, tour Argonne’s cutting-edge research facilities, connect with a mentor, engage in hands-on experiments, and compete in a team challenge.

Mentors must be available to commit to the all-day in-person event as well as attend a 1-2 hr virtual mentor training the week of the event.

Registration is open through January 31st or until capacity is reached.

FAQs

Do I need to be an engineer or scientist to mentor?

No!  Anyone with STEM experience is important and welcome.  Mentors come from all fields and both female and male mentors are encouraged to participate.

What does a mentor do?

As a mentor, you will be paired with two students.  You will accompany the students throughout the day’s scheduled activities, which include a variety of presentations, hands-on activities, and laboratory tours. Transportation to and from the tours will be provided for the students and mentors.

Do I need to plan any activities?

No, the day’s schedule is set ahead of time and will be given to you.  Tours are given by tour guides and the larger group events are run by various speakers and hosts.  At lunchtime, mentors will be provided lunch and eat side by side with students to foster discussion.  As a mentor, your main role is to guide the students throughout the day.  You are also there to answer questions, encourage participation, act as role models, and help break negative stereotypes.

Does IGED really matter?

Yes!  Your time can make a difference.  IGED is a special event targeting young female students before they encounter the peer pressure of high school.  It gives them exposure to various STEM fields and helps them identify their interests and meet female role models.
