Seeking Teachers andVolunteers!

Are you a postdoc, graduate or undergraduate student in mathematics? A math professor? Previously earned a math degree? Teach math in school? Work in a math related field? Math Circles of Chicago needs you!

Math Circles of Chicago provides free, unique math enrichment programs for 5th–12th grade students of diverse backgrounds. Through fun and exciting math experiences, we are committed to helping children develop a passion for mathematics.

Come work with 5th to 12th graders in Chicago who are interested in doing novel, mathematics. Have fun doing it. We serve more than 1,000 children in locations throughout the city and online, and we will be growing to more sites in the upcoming years.

How can you participate?

Lead teacher: We pay our teachers $100 per session to teach a session. (You can, of course, choose not to be paid).

Assist: Volunteer to help the lead teacher in each classroom. We like to have adults in the room to ask good questions and encourage exploration. Online assistants frequently work with small groups of 3-5 students in breakout rooms.

We hold sessions on Saturdays at UChicago, Payton HS, Back of the Yards HS, on Tuesdays at St. Therese Chinese Catholic School, and on Thursdays at Lane Tech HS.We hold on-line sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays. We also run sessions at community centers, homeless shelters, in local after school programs, and in partnership with other STEM programs.

For fall 2022 we are particularly looking for teachers, assistants, and volunteers for:

Online sessions: Thursdays at 7PM, Saturdays at 10AM, or Saturdays at 1PM.

Community Centers: Sunshine Gospel Ministry at 500 E. 61st; Gad. s Hill at 1919 W. Cullerton (weekday

late afternoons-day based on teacher availability)

Chicago STEM community organization Project Syncere is holding a series of virtual career panels and opportunities to participate in STEM activities with students between Wednesday February 28th and April 4th.

There are many times and locations to volunteer with the organization.

Below is a message from a high school teacher at Bennett Day School

Hello,

I am a teacher at Bennett Day School in Chicago and am teaching a trimester physics elective focused on electricity and energy. The class will be doing some projects related to renewable energy and energy storage. I know that Argonne does research in this area and would love to have a speaker come visit the class if possible.    If it would be possible to have a scientist who works on energy/battery related research at Argonne come to visit, please let me know!    Thank you   The class meets Mon, Tues, Thurs or Friday from 2:30-3:45pm.

Junior Achievement of Chicago will host a series of career day events at a variety of Chicago Public Schools across the city.

Each event will take place on a different date and time but all involve multiple opportunities to interact with elementary school students

from diverse backgrounds.
