Tracking volunteer hours for FY26 STARS Mentors

Hello,

the Bridge Into Internships program is a six-week (June 15th - July 31st) pre-internship experience designed to provide rising college freshmen with hands-on learning, professional development, and exposure to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program is intended to help prepare students to be internship-ready for future opportunities, including programs such as SULI and SIP.

Mentors play a key role in this experience by offering guidance, sharing insight into their work, and helping students better understand what a pathway into STEM can look like in practice. Mentors are paired with a student and support them in learning the tenets of research within their discipline. For many participants, this will be their first meaningful connection to a STEM professional and a national laboratory environment.

If you are interested in serving as a mentor or learning more, please join us for an information session on Wednesday, April 8. If you know someone on your team or at the lab who may be a good fit, please feel free to share this opportunity. On April 23, 2026 from 5:00-6:00 pm CT, the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign is hosting a two‑session virtual AI Insights Panel Series that aims to connect Grainger students with key industry practitioners and thought leaders who are shaping the future of AI‑enabled engineering work. Primary themes of the panel include: AI in Real Engineering Practice, Fundamentals and Foundation, Hiring & Skills, Growing in the Job and Leadership, Risk & Ethics.

UIUC is seeking an Argonne panelist for session 1 (AI and ML Technologies). Panelists will participate on Zoom with a live interactive student watch party via the Grainger College’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications Auditorium coordinated by Eng. Council student leaders and the Dean’s Student Advisory Group.

The ideal panelist would be a mid-level manager that can discuss technical research and skills/competencies needed in this area. Panelists would not need to prepare slides or formal remarks. Other organizations participating will be Microsoft, Intel, NVIDIA, John Deere, Kearney.

Anne Fox Elementary School in Hanover Park has invited Argonne to take part in their upcoming Family STEM Fair, and we’re looking for a staff member to facilitate a hands-on activity with students and families. All materials and training will be provided by the STEM Outreach team — this is a great opportunity to connect with the community and share your enthusiasm for science and engineering in a fun, low-pressure setting.

The Postdoc Research Slam is a competition where contestants are challenged to present a compelling three-minute presentation of their research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The competition will be judged by a diverse panel of Argonne staff and leaders.

To enter the slam, postdocs must submit a 3-minute video of their presentation. Volunteers will be assigned no more than 10 videos to review and provide feedback that the postdocs can use to refine their presentation for the final slam competition. In the event that we have more than 14 submissions, reviewers will provide a score that can be used to down-select to a group of finalists who will compete in the live Postdoc Research Slam at the end of July.

The initial review is expected to take place from May 4 - June 12th. This will include viewing your assigned videos, submitting a score sheet and attending a wrap-up meeting to agree upon this year's finalists.

Reviewers will be provided guidance, a spreadsheet with guiding questions and if needed, a score sheet. You do not need to have a STEM background, but strong presentation skills are recommended to provide effective feedback to the postdocs. We may meet once or twice as a group to go over guidance and to discuss the video submissions.

Lunch with a Researcher offers an exciting opportunity for research staff to speak and connect with a small group of undergraduate students about their work, academic/professional journey, and wisdom learned along the way. Bring your lunch and get to know our talented summer interns, who are eager to learn more about you and your work.

In-person Lunch with a Researcher sessions will be offered on select Tuesdays this summer from noon to 1 PM. They will be held in the building 213 cafeteria (Nickel Table, the large table by the windows closest to the main entrance).

These informal gatherings are meant to be a fun and low-stakes way for students and professionals alike to connect. Our goal is to use these sessions to expose students to exciting scientific breakthroughs around the Lab, help interns build connections with brilliant researchers, and foster Argonne’s vibrant student community.

We kindly ask that interested researchers only sign-up for one session during the summer.

The role of the Postdoc Research Slam Mentor is to work with a postdoc one-on-one to provide feedback and help them prepare for the Postdoc Research Slam, to be held the last week in July. Mentors will be provided resources, guidance and opportunities to connect.

Mentors do not have to be an expert in the postdoc's scientific domain. We are looking for people with good communication and feedback skills who can spot a great talk to a broad audience.

Mentors can expect to support postdocs from June 15th - July 30th. Mentors and postdocs will schedule their own sessions and will be invited to group practice sessions in July to allow postdocs to prepare for the final competition.

Membership in the Veterans ERG does not require participation in all events or meetings. Join us when your schedule allows it! There are quarterly meetings and annual events that you can attend to show your support for the military and for veterans. In addition to annual events, Veterans ERG meetings are usually something fun outside of a typical workday. Past meetings included happy hours, free lunches, bike rides, and more.

Any community event or program related to Veterans that you attend can be included in community service hours.
