Opportunities From: Argonne National Laboratory

IMSA is requesting a guest-led workshop from Argonne National Laboratory as part of Girls IN2 STEM, a five-week mentorship and enrichment program designed for middle school students who identify as female or non-binary. Hosted by the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), this program connects youth with high school mentors and features both a virtual curriculum and weekly in-person workshops focused on inspiring interest in STEM fields. This fall, we are excited to expand our programming through a partnership with Argonne for our Biology and Chemistry Week. We would like an Argonne representative to lead a session that includes a short lecture or science topic presentation, centered on a subject of your choice within biology or chemistry, followed by an engaging, hands-on activity that promotes scientific inquiry and real-world application. The goal is to provide our students with an opportunity to learn directly from professionals and deepen their understanding of STEM in action.

The Presbyterian Women's Club of Community Presbyterian Church, Clarendon Hills, IL would like a lay presentation on AI or some of area of interest to the general public.

The talk could focus on the revolution of AI - pros and cons or some other area of high interest to the general public. Also, the development of new x ray technology might be of interest.

Setting up an opportunity for symposium volunteers to record their hours (i.e. time spent meeting with subcommittees, planning, sending emails, etc.)

Volunteers will serve as judges who score the research posters presented by postdocs during the Poster morning session (10:00 - 11:30 AM, October 31, 2025). Based on their scores, the best Posters will be awarded at the closing of the PRCS 2025 event. Volunteering hours will be tracked using this volunteer management system!

Seeking Teachers andVolunteers!

Are you a postdoc, graduate or undergraduate student in mathematics? A math professor? Previously earned a math degree? Teach math in school? Work in a math related field? Math Circles of Chicago needs you!

Math Circles of Chicago provides free, unique math enrichment programs for 5th–12th grade students of diverse backgrounds. Through fun and exciting math experiences, we are committed to helping children develop a passion for mathematics.

Come work with 5th to 12th graders in Chicago who are interested in doing novel, mathematics. Have fun doing it. We serve more than 1,000 children in locations throughout the city and online, and we will be growing to more sites in the upcoming years.

How can you participate?

Lead teacher: We pay our teachers $100 per session to teach a session. (You can, of course, choose not to be paid).

Assist: Volunteer to help the lead teacher in each classroom. We like to have adults in the room to ask good questions and encourage exploration. Online assistants frequently work with small groups of 3-5 students in breakout rooms.

We hold sessions on Saturdays at UChicago, Payton HS, Back of the Yards HS, on Tuesdays at St. Therese Chinese Catholic School, and on Thursdays at Lane Tech HS.We hold on-line sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays. We also run sessions at community centers, homeless shelters, in local after school programs, and in partnership with other STEM programs.

For fall 2022 we are particularly looking for teachers, assistants, and volunteers for:

Online sessions: Thursdays at 7PM, Saturdays at 10AM, or Saturdays at 1PM.

Community Centers: Sunshine Gospel Ministry at 500 E. 61st; Gad. s Hill at 1919 W. Cullerton (weekday

late afternoons-day based on teacher availability)

Senior student would like to speak with someone about research in bioscience and environmental science. 

A 4th grade teacher will be teaching a unit on energy and is inviting a researcher to talk to her students about their work.

3rd graders at Quest Academy are learning about atomic structure and the periodic table in February. They are requesting an activity that will complement their learning.

Outreach staff will provide materials and training for nuclear activity.

Chicago STEM community organization Project Syncere is holding a series of virtual career panels and opportunities to participate in STEM activities with students between Wednesday February 28th and April 4th.

There are many times and locations to volunteer with the organization.

In addition to annual events, Veterans ERG meetings are usually something fun outside of a typical workday. Past meetings included happy hours, free lunches, bike rides, and more.

Any community event or program related to Veterans that you attend can be included in community service hours.
